Mardi Gras 2015 - Fun in Every Way

Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler

(Lay say lay bohn tohn roo lay)

Mardi Gras 2015 was a huge success.
We watched the parades roll,
we caught a ton of beads, we ate good food and heard good music.
We also caught purses, shoes and stuffed animals.
We dressed up & danced and had fun with friends and family.

The Krewe of Nyx Parade rolled on Wednesday night, February 11.
They throw purses from the floats.  I did catch a purse.
The wonderful Mari Roberts was my Mardi Gras mentor.

The Krewe of Muses parade rolled on the evening of February 12.
My friend Claudia Lynch is a Muse,
she was riding on one of the floats...She threw me a shoe -
I only got it because my tall friends caught it for me.
Here is the boot that Claudia decorated...
along with about 60 other shoes and boots she threw to other people.
People who ride on the floats buy or make their own 'Throws'.

On Saturday we were invited to the famous Pine Street Block party.
Here was some of the best music of the week!  Street dancing too.

We watched the Krewe of Thoth parade on Sunday afternoon
in front of Jessica and Melvin's home on Magazine Street.

Alice and Isla flew in from NC on Sunday afternoon
to join us for the fun.  Here they are at the
Krewe of Bacchus Parade on Sunday evening.
Lots of beads came their way!
Everyone loves throwing beads to a baby.
And Isla loved catching them.

We caught lots of beads at every parade.
Beads, beads and more beads.
On Lundi Gras we went to the Orpheus parade
and the ball in the evening.
It was a huge event and an amazing experience.

Sort of a once in a lifetime thing.

All dressed up and ready for the ball.

At the ball - dancing and fun.

On Mardi Gras morning we went to the Zulu parade.
It was a cold morning and we got hot chocolate

at Mojos to warm up.
Then the sun came out we were off to watch
the Krewe of Rex parade.
Rex is my favorite parade.
Here is Alice with some of the very cool
Rex beads we caught that day.

Rex, King of Carnival on his float.

Escape to the Beach - February 6, 7, 8, 2015

We made a quick weekend getaway to the beach at Destin.

Out the door of our room at the Sea Oats Motel.
Destin on a budget...

It was actually pretty chilly - but we were so happy the sun was out.

Gordon's version of the view out our door.

Visitors are Sweet! January 2015

Rick and Cindy came from Wisconsin to visit us.
We hiked at the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park on a winter day.

This nutrias family was out.  Sort of a swamp rat.

The canal

Cindy, Rick, Gordon and me!

Lots of beautiful egrets...
A Great Egret.
End of the trail - looking out at the winter marsh.

Dr. Martin Luther King Day...New Orleans Style. "How Long? Not Long."

The Martin Luther King Day parade in downtown New Orleans.
The missionaries marched.

I marched with my friend Joy Ebel Johnson (on my right) in support of her
Icons For Peace organization.
It was an eye-opening experience and I'm so glad I did it.

Another New Orleans first for me.

A re-reading of Dr. King's 'How Long? Not Long!" speech.

BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS - A RE-ENACTMENT - January 2015

Our friends Marilyn & Kevin Simister came to town on a family history pilgrimage and we accompanied them to the Bicentennial Re-enactment of the Battle of New Orleans. The re-enactment started on Friday evening, January 15.  Here are the troops taking the field and firing cannon and rifle.  Marilyn's family had Tennessee ancestors who died in the battle.

Everything continued the next day - a chilly Saturday morning.

The different regiments have unique uniforms.

The re-enactors are an amazingly dedicated group who pay strict attention to historically accurate detail in everything they wear & do.  The re-enactment was in Chalmette and we had a great time.

A few of the women dressed as soldiers and took the field.  Most were back at the camp in more traditional roles.  The costumes were amazing.

This woman told us she was "The Colonel's Lady."  The stars on her coat tell her husband's rank.

Activity back at the encampment after the battle.

It was an unseasonably cold weekend - but they stayed in the scores of encampment tents.
(Though we met a few who said they relocated to the Holiday Inn!)

We had a chat with General Jackson after one of the battles.  He remained totally in character.

Old Hickory himself.

1.  Oriah Lonsdale - is still living in Austin.  He has 3 bands:  Party Wizard, One Eyed Cat & Profane Anything Band.  He gardens and he does some life coaching, yoga & is an urban biker - always surprising us.  Beloved by nieces & nephews and everyone who knows him.
2.  Jacob Lonsdale - is still living in Marshfield, Wisconsin being a great dad of 5, husband and Branch President.  MD practicing pediatric non-surgical orthopedics - on his way to becoming an expert in the treatment of clubfoot in children.  He has a few minutes for mountain biking & snowboarding.
3.  Lisa Lonsdale - shares the craziness with Jacob.  At home with the 5 kids & teaching all kinds of classes at the local YMCA like zumba & water aerobics.  Volunteers at the school daily & teaches piano to all the kiddos.
4.  Eben is 13.  When we say he's a reader, we mean that he always has a book in hand.  He ran on the cross-country team and plays the guitar and piano.  He's a scout, a singer and a snowboarder.
5.  Graham is 10.  Awesome snowboarder & awesome young fellow.  He plays the violin and piano.  Wrestler and singer and boyscout.
6.  Solenne is 8.  She was baptized this year.  She swims, plays the piano (even upside down), sings and dances.  She's a wonderful girl.
7.  Adeline is 6.  She started kindergarten this year, then she and I went to Disney World together - both pretty exciting events.  She plays the piano & dances too.
8.  Gretta is 3.  Shall we say she's in charge.  And you couldn't find a smarter girl to be in charge of a family of 7.
9.  Ben Lonsdale - is living in South Jordan, Utah being a great dad of 3, husband and Elders Quorum President.  He's the sales manager over strategic accounts at Blendtec and keeps his suitcase packed for travel both domestic and foreign.  There's a little time for snowboarding and mountain biking.

15.  Jeremy Morris - is mowing our lawn & shoveling the snow in Highland plus being a terrific dad and husband. He's the lead statistician, an analyst and innovator at Domo.  You have to know what Domo does to understand all that.  He teaches Sunday School and snowboards too.  Plays the guitar and helps in every way.
16.  Penelope is 6.  She went with Gordon and me to Disneyland this year - it was magical & she was a tireless park hopper.  She's reading, playing the guitar & learning to sew & loving all arts and crafts.

20.  Seth Curtis - moved to North Carolina too.  He's the most engaged and loving husband and first time dad.  He's a Captian flying out of Raleigh for Go Jet Airline - a regional carrier for Delta and United.  He's also in charge of the table saw for the Curtis home remodeling duo.
21.  Isla is One.  She has also learned to walk, feed herself, play & sleep on her own.  Her day is full.
22.  Ian Lonsdale - is living in San Diego, California.  As much as he loves doing all things at the beach, he has to show up & be assistant sales manager at Tiffany & Co. in San Diego.  He taught himself to surf & runs & bikes along the beach.  He and Audrey might not ever come back to Utah.
23.  Audrey Trottier - lives in San Diego too.  She is the administrative and fiscal assistant at the University of California San Diego Geisel library.  That's Dr. Seuss to you.  She does ballet, runs and rides bike, cooks and is learning to surf.  If only the water would just warm up!
24.  Gordon Lonsdale - moved to New Orleans, just temporarily to be sure, but for how long is undetermined.  Director of Photography on NCIS - New Orleans for CBS.  Making the show look beautiful 5 days a week, 14 hours a day (if he's lucky.)  Eating good food and then running it off. He's teaching both Gospel Doctrine & High Priests Group and a few other things too.  His camera is always at hand.
25.  Lynn B. Lonsdale - moved to New Orleans as well.  Not without a protest, but I'm actually learning to love the Accidental Southern Life.  Sitting in on classes at Tulane, loving the streetcar and the Garden District, the food and all the differences.  RS Secretary and a few other things too.  Working at the Baton Rouge Temple, yoga and quilting.  Finally there's more time for Family History.

Phew - now even I know more than I wanted to.
